1906 - Albert Sabin - Polish/American physician and medical scientist. He developed the first oral polio vaccine which protected millions of children world-wide from the horrific disease.
1873 - Lee De Forest - Iowa inventor and holder of hundreds of patents. He is most noted for cration of the Audion vacuum tube, the key to making radio reception possible.

1883 - History's greatest recorded natural fireworks display, the volcanic explosion of Krakatoa, occurred. The blast, heard some 3,000 miles away, spewed five cubic miles of debris into the air, fifty miles high and created tidal waves up to 120 feet high.
